LAPAROSCOPIC GASTRIC BYPASS

SURGERY FOR CONTROL OF MORBID OBESITY

Morbid obesity is defined as greater than 100 pounds over ideal body weight, or a Body Mass Index over 40. Such levels of obesity have been shown to result in severe health problems, including stroke, heart attacks and early death. Diets and medical plans for weight loss have been shown to have poor long term results, with inability to maintain weight loss. Long term weight loss without surgery is only achieved by 5-10% of morbid obese people.

Surgery for morbid obesity has been shown to be effective and produce long term weight loss. Weight loss of up 70% of excess weight can be achieved and maintained.

GASTRIC BYPASS SURGERY

There are several operations for morbid obesity. We are chosen to provide gastric bypass to our patients. This operation has been shown to be effective for long term weight reduction and has few side effects and complications. Also very importantly it can be performed laparoscopically or minimally invasive. This results in small incisions, significantly decreased post operative discomfort and prompt recovery. The hospital stay is as short as 2-3 days. The fact that a large incision is avoided is important in that it allows prompt return to normal function. This is important in order to quickly participate in the rest of the health and fitness program.
